I Hate Losing
When the winning horse crossed the finish line, I could hear people cheering from my back porch. I was happy to see that the owner was, in fact, a man from Pikesville, a neighborhood just down the hill. Seth Skalman. Seriously, yes, Seth Klarman. He’s a mellow guy from Baltimore, worth like $1.5 billion dollars. But get this, he lost money on his stables for almost thirty years. Today, a stroke of mercurial luck.
His horse, Early Voting, was tailing on the outside for most of the mile-and-a-quarter race…
At the final stretch, when the beasts were bleating and huffing and pushing their last grueling strides in, Early Voting pulled ahead and Baltimore let out a collective sigh of relief… then grinned.
Nothing like some good old fashioned hometown pride.
